Treatment of this pathology begins controlling general cardiovascular risk. This means, control of the blood pressure, strict control of Diabetes mellitus, a healthy diet to control the body weight and cholesterol levels, to stop smoking and to practice daily exercise.
When the disease is severe, there are three types of intervention to save the leg, depending on each particular case:
Angioplasty and stent implantation :
Consists in the aperture of the artery using a balloon, to implant a stent, a metallic device to prevent a new narrowing of the artery. This procedure is done through a needle, under local anesthesia with the patient awake and is very similar to an arteriography. The patient is discharge the next day.
